Driving School FAQs

AAA has been providing quality, on-the-road instruction for more than 80 years and is a trusted name in automotive and traffic safety. Our instructors are state-licensed, highly trained professionals who live our mission every day: "Creating Lifelong Safe Drivers." We train in late-model, well-maintained vehicles, including EVs at select locations.

AAA can also sponsor students for their road test, which includes use of one of our vehicles—this requires at least 2-3 weeks' notice. Contact the call center to arrange sponsorship at (855)222-1050.

Learner's permits in Connecticut are issued through the Connecticut DMV. Drivers under 18 must complete an approved driver training course first; once you turn 16 and hold your permit, you'll begin logging the required behind-the-wheel practice hours with your at-home coach before scheduling a road test.

*If you are over 18, a driver education course is not required to obtain the permit.

All our lessons begin and end at a local AAA branch location.

Once you have your permit, road test appointments are scheduled directly through the Connecticut DMV.

If you'd like AAA sponsorship for your road test, which includes use of one of our vehicles, please allow at least 2-3 weeks' notice and contact the call center at (855)222-1050. At least one lesson with AAA is required before sponsorship, and final approval is based on the student's demonstrated ability and skills.

Licensing timelines and required supervised driving hours are set by the Connecticut DMV and depend on your age and permit status. Visit the Connecticut DMV website for the requirements that apply to you.

DMV fees change from time to time. Visit the Connecticut DMV website for the current fee schedule.
